Title: Sicarius: The Musical
Post by: sweartoad on March 25, 2013, 02:36:06 am
People who frequent the chatroom will know this: that we have it on very good authority that Sicarius' inner soundtrack may or may not include the song "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" by Bryan Adams. His theme song may also be "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls.

This got us thinking about what other songs Sicarius lives his life to. Was "Jolene" as covered by The White Stripes running through his head at every mention of Deret? What about Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence" all those times he worried about spilling the beans to Sespian?

Oh yes, ladies and gents - this is the power ballad thread, as moderated by Sicarius' inner angsty poet.

We've got a list and we're not afraid to share it - add yours and see where it goes! Please read over and make sure your selection isn't here before adding it

PS: Since this is a long post try not to quote the entire thing - it's hard to follow a conversation when the entire page is basically one massive quote :D

Getting ready for our flight and I had to say, Billy Joel & Bryan Adams made my morning.  Now if you can find a way to work in something by Huey Lewis (Happy to be Stuck With You, perhaps?) I will be set.  :D

Thanks for the laughs. Great idea. I love it! Such good suggestions!

This thread is well-timed! I heard a song the other day and I cracked up because I immediately thought of Sicarius - When You Say Nothing at All by Alison Krauss. I found it quite cute.  Made me think of another mushy song - Something by the Beatles.

Since this thread is, in fact, called Sicarius: The Musical, how about some show tunes? Being the musical theatre nerd that I am, that is where my brain goes.

I Can Do That - A Chorus Line (I can forage...)
I've Never Been In Love Before - Guys and Dolls
Take Me As I Am - Jekyll and Hyde (You know who I am, this is who I am, take me as I am...)
You Are My Home - The Scarlet Pimpernel
My Own Best Friend - Chicago
Not While I'm Around - Sweeney Todd (No one's going to harm you...)
Dangerous Game - Jekyll and Hyde (I am losing my mind, I am losing control, full of feelings I can't define...)

And of course there's opener from the show Assassins - Everybody's Got The Right, which says: Come on and shoot a president!

Makes me think we should compile a soundtrack for the others! For Amaranthe, Toucha Toucha Touch Me from Rocky Horror, or City on Fire from Sweeney Todd.  For Maldynado - I Feel Pretty from West Side Story...it's alarming how charming I feel...I can see it now.

 :D

OK...now that we have a list started we should engage in filking behavior to make the lyrics even closer to the stories.

For those of you who don't know filk is a style of folk music that originated at science fiction conventions.  Sometimes its original songs but more often its lyrical parodies of existing songs (think Weird Al Yancovic).  I couldn't find a good consensus definition for the term other than something akin to the U.S. Supreme Court's definition of pornography (I know it when I see it).   The word itself can be used as either a noun (filk) or a verb (filked, filking etc.).

Eye of the Tiger by Survivor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoDKQYn-ANE) is perfect "Sicarius training" music. It's not a power ballad, granted, but still.

I see him singing Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mb3iPP-tHdA) when he finally laughs, loves and lets it be known ("If music be the food of love, then laughter is it's queen"). The video is seriously horrible and looks like a Monty Python skit, but the song is a classic.

The Spy by the Doors (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcZ6JQv0DPo) would be a good song for him to "stand guard over Amaranthe" by. Lyrics for that are here (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/doors/thespy.html).

When their time comes to leave the living behind (when they are old and grey), they simply must go to the notes of Don't Fear the Reaper (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEcKEFlREcs), the HIM version.

How Soon Is Now? The Smiths

Sounds badass, but is pretty lonely and lots of turmoil in the lyrics: "You shut your mouth/How can you say/I go about things the wrong way/I'm human and I deserve to be loved/Just like everybody else does."

I'm thinking that it's about his confusion in Dark Currents, while he's trying to understand the "No killing" rule, but figuring out Am isn't just a means to an end anymore.

Blood and Betrayal: While he's taking that long, long run: Us Against the World, Coldplay  -- If anybody is "My drunken hazard Daniel/in a lion's den" it's Amaranthe.

Not a power ballad, but... The other day My Never by Blue October came on my iPod and I was going, oh yeah, this is Angsty!Sicarius (I lost a lot of what I don't expect to ever return/ and the chorus: I had a dream that you were with me, it wasn't my fault/ You rolled me over, flipped me over like a somersault)

And then I realized it's also the theme song of the angsty werewolf from Twilight and my brain died a little.

Well done, ladies. Just the other day, I was singing some Foreigner in the shower. "I wanna know what love is/I want you to show me..."

But you've completely missed Meatloaf. Travesty.

Here are two bits from Sarah McLachlan songs that have been floating around in my head:

You take me in, no questions asked/You strip away the ugliness that surrounds me/Are you an angel?/Am I already that gone?/I only hope that I won't disappoint you

-From "Sweet Surrender"

I never would have opened up/But you seemed so real to me/And after all the bullshit I've heard/It's refreshing now to see/That I don't have to pretend/She doesn't expect it from me

-From "Good Enough"

Angsty!Sciarius makes me sad.  :'(

I have always thought that the album "The Sound of White Noise" by Anthrax was his life story. It is perfect for him. Here is a verse that really strikes me-

I was told to love you
I was told to try
I was born to save you
I was born to die
I'll always be your scapegoat
You'll never take the blame
You never had a chance
It was your soul to save

I am your one night nightmare
Pain is all you see
The blood is on your hands
I hope you're proud of me

.........
Bastard son, your saving grace
Left alone I found my place
I find love in what I steal
You should of left me rest in Potters Field
I was told to.I was told to...

Your beliefs turned me into this
Bite the hand that feeds, you're so selfish
Thank you mother for giving me this life
I'll bring down the rapture
Then we'll see who lies

Ya, this album is his. Very story- inspiring album. :)

Maybe I'm Amazed by Sir Paul McCartney -- a song about a man who can't believe this amazing woman loves him...and the surprise at how much he loves her in return.  :)

So I've got some Inner Sicarius songs here. Been listening to David Gray's Flesh this morning and lyrics kept catching me. Pretty much every song said something relevant to me about this man. Inner Sicarius might like some poetic folk music...

OK... So if we're adding showtunes, I'd like to put forth 'For Good' from Wicked.  It works for Am/Sic, but could apply to other team combinations too.

A few phrases that stick out..

"Just look at me, I'm limited, and you can do all I couldn't do."

"I've heard it said that people come into our lives for a reason
bringing something we must learn
and we are led to those who help us most to grow
if we let them and we help them in return."

"Who can say if I've been changed for the better
-I do believe I've been changed for the better-
But because I knew you, I have changed for good."

Aww.... now it makes me think of the end of FiBII. *SadFace*

I love this idea. A few thoughts....
1. Whoever put Rasputina's Wish You Were Here - genius.
2. Why is there not more of the Smiths?  This is angst, right?

So...
The Smiths - Never Had No One Ever
 "When you walk without ease
On these streets were you were raised
I had a really bad dream, it lasted 20 years, 7 months, and 27 days
I never, I'm alone, and I
Never, ever oh ... had no one ever "

Rope on Fire by Morphine
Follow my Ruin by Royksopp
Sunchemical (Californium) by O Yuki Conjugate (good instrumental for night time mayhem)

And probably my favorite - absolutely perfect song?
Captain Badass by Songs Ohia. Set to a little scene in FIB I.
"brown eyes your pulse is getting hotter
brown eyes your pulse is getting quicker
quote Captain Badass,
"i am setting your heart on fire
so when you leave me
i will burn on in your soul" "

If nothing else at least  listen to it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDuPTYg6d2k), the singer's voice is awesome. The lyrics are spot on (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/poetsofthefall/illusiondream.html) too!

"Like a Lover" by Grant-Lee Phillips

Of all the fishes in the sea
So ghostly white and glittering
Nobody's ever stole my heart
And took it down to the ocean dark
Nobody's ever meant that much to me
Judge and my jury hear my plea
No woman's ever held the reigns on me
No warden's ever held that key
Not a soul on cell block three
Nobody but her come to set me free

I rattle on for miles
Put it on a page
You let me tap away
I'll rattle on for days
Days

Nobody hits home the way ya do
Nobody makes sense out of my blues
Nobody makes me laugh that hard
Or hurts me so 'til I see stars
Nobody holds a candle up to you
Nobody knows best how to shine my crown
Or the ease it takes to knock it down
Nobody's ever been that true
None of the flunkies on the midnight crew
I've found something there that I'm afraid lose

I rattle on for miles
Put it on a page
You watch me tap away
I'll rattle on for days
Days

Nobody's gonna piss me off so bad
It's a certain power that you have
Never one just to recoil
'Fore ya bring my blood to a boil
Nobody like a lover makes you feel so sad

Nobody like a lover makes ya feel so sad
Nobody like a lover
Nobody like a lover oh oh
Nobody like a lover makes ya feel so sad
Sad

Here I Go Again" by Whitesnake. This is for before he meets Amaranthe.

I don't know where I'm going, but I sure know where I've been
Hanging on the promises in the songs of yesterday
And I've made up my mind
I ain't wasting no more time
Here I go again, here I go again
Though I keep searching for an answer
I never seem to find what I'm looking for
Oh Lord, I pray you give me strength to carry on
'Cause I know what it means
To walk along the lonely street of dreams
Here I go again on my own
Going down the only road I've ever known
Like a drifter, I was born to walk alone
And I've made up my mind
I ain't wasting no more time
