EE fic for Yuletide, anyone?
« on: October 02, 2012, 09:52:23 pm »
Fandom nominations for Yuletide end tomorrow, and I realized that not only had I not made my nominations yet, when I was thinking about what to nominate earlier, I had really wanted to nominate EE, but there wasn't any interest from anyone else on the Livejournal community and I was too shy to ask here. But that time is past! *jazz hands*

For those who don't know, Yuletide in a multi-fandom fic exchange that runs every holiday season. It's exclusively for rare/small fandoms -- fandoms that don't have much fic, basically. This means that those fandoms that are so large they threaten to consume the internet are excluded, and the book or movie or TV show with a tiny, tiny following that you love and want desperately to see more fic for gets some much needed attention.

Here is the intro to Yuletide 2012 and the entry with information about nominating fandoms this year is here, but I'll summarize in the next paragraph, so people who are already familiar with Yuletide can skip down to the end of the post.

How it works is that fandoms are nominated at the end of September-ish, the too big fandoms are weeded out in the next couple weeks, sign-ups run until the end of October, and then assignments/prompts go out in the beginning of November. You have from the time assignments go out until December 22nd to write a story that is at least 1000 words long using at least one of the characters in the fandom your recipient requested, but the details in the prompt are optional. So, for example, if your recipient requested Emperor's Edge and the characters Maldynado and Isabelle, and then in their prompt wanted them having a torrid affair, but you weren't comfortable writing about the sexual bond between a man and his chicken, you could just write a story about Maldynado on his own or Maldynado taking Isabelle for a walk with a tiny chicken leash or Isabelle rescuing Maldynado from certain danger or any other story involving one of them which didn't involve chicken sex. Or Maldynado sex, if that was your objection.

If you find yourself unable to complete your assignment, there is a defaulting deadline, so that the prompt can go to another author to fill. I'm not sure when that is for this year -- usually it's some time in the beginning of December. After that, you must fulfill your prompt or you won't be eligible to participate in Yuletide again.

Stories are revealed on December 25th.

Nominating fandoms isn't necessary to participate in Yuletide. You only have to sign-up in mid-October. When you sign up, you make requests and offer to write in fandoms so that you can be matched with another recipient. You are required to request characters/provide prompts in three fandoms, and can include an optional fourth so that you are sure of getting a match. You can offer to write for up to six fandoms. (I think? This changed last year. Previously you could offer to write in an unlimited number of fandoms.)

Yuletide is an anonymous fic exchange, and author names are revealed on January 1st, at which point authors can reply to comments left on the fic they wrote. This means that you're not supposed to talk about what fandom you received in your assignment until after authors are revealed, so that no one can guess and gossip, in case it spoils someone's gift. No shaking the presents! They mean it!

You can see what was written for last year's exchange here. It's all run on Archive of Our Own now, which means if you want to participate, you'll have to request a sign-up so you don't get stuck on the waiting list.

Yuletide is such a good time -- it's a very warm and fuzzy thing, because the focus is on getting everyone stories that they'll like in fandoms they love from people who also love that fandom. I've received some really beautiful stories participating in Yuletide, and that pleasure is actually shadowed by the pleasure of writing someone a story and having them like it, because it gave them a little bright spot during the holiday season. The writing quality for Yuletide is almost without exception really high and definitely worth the effort of participating.

So, is anyone interested in seeing Emperor's Edge for Yuletide? If you are, let me know and I'll include it in my nominations! And then somebody else has to sign up and request it and offer to write in it, so we can see some stories involving the gang. There's no guarantee that you'll be matched with someone requesting an Emperor's Edge story, but the fandoms that involve the smallest number of requests and offers generally get matched first, so the likelihood is up there.

I would be interested in this!
Or maybe for my unique style of leadership which, at no extra charge, includes non-linear thinking, inappropriate jokes, and a tendency to blow things up?

I'd say I was opening up new frontiers on the internet, but I'm pretty sure someone's been there before. Probably in ancient Rome, since there's nothing new under the sun.

Marlene, I will nominate the series then and see what comes of it! I guess I'll post here again when sign-ups open, to remind anybody else who participates. :)

Cool deal, Sarah! I'll definitely be interested in participating. Though who knows what I'd write for a fandom other than EE...

Yay, more people!

I am nominating the series and characters right now. Unfortunately, each person is limited to nominating four characters, and I've selected Sicarius, Amaranthe, Mal and Books. If anybody wants to be able to select any others, please go to the nomination form and nominate them! You have until 8 PM CST, so an hour and half from now.

Just so everyone knows, and before I forget again, sign-ups for Yuletide have been open for a few days now. The info post is here, and sign-ups will be open until October 28. You shouldn't wait until the last minute, though, because sometimes the website experiences technical difficulties because of the number of people visiting it.

If you don't have an account at Archive of Our Own, you can request a sign-up here so you get bumped to the top of the waiting list.

Now to finish my sign-up and Dear Goat letter. Oy.

ETA: Coding. Sigh.

Do you have a strategy for optimizing the probability of matching with EE requests? I'm guessing if my other two requests are for comparatively rare fandoms, that's unlikely to work... Or did you just choose the ones you know the best? Also, what's RPF?

There's no strategy for optimizing matches, unfortunately! They used to prioritize matching for fandoms with a small number of requests and offers, but I don't think that's possible anymore, now that they've moved to AO3.

However, what you can do to get more EE fanfic is go to the Yuletide letters post and see who has linked to their Yuletide letter and requested EE. There's a spreadsheet cataloguing the letters, so you don't have to go through all the comments. Thank god!

The Yuletide admins encourage people writing treats, which are extra stories apart from the one you're assigned based on people's requests. So, you're assigned one request based on what you offered, which you must fulfill, but then you can also write additional stories and submit them to the archive. If they're submitted to the regular collection, then they need to be at least 1000 words long, but there's this period called Yuletide Madness between the time the collection closes and the time story notifications go out where stories less than 1000 words can be posted to the Madness collection. After author names are revealed on January 1st, New Years Resolutions stories can be posted until next Yuletide based on the previous year's requests.

For the New Years Resolutions stories, you don't even need to have signed up for Yuletide. You just need an AO3 account so you can submit stories.

So, what this means is that you can go through the Dear Yuletide Writer letters and find prompts you want to write for that you haven't been assigned. These could be EE stories, and Yuletide provides an excellent time to expose people to fandoms they didn't know about before and suck them in.

As far as I know, I'm the only one who has signed up and posted a letter requesting EE. But if MORE people do, that means there would be more prompts and more exposure for the series. Those are good things! More people could be writing EE stories! Who don't post here!

This is me bragging: last year, one of the people who read the story I wrote, without any previous exposure to that series, went out and read all of the books, solely because of my story. This is me done bragging. I want that to happen for these books.

ETA: Oh, hey, look at me only answering one of your questions! Sorry!

When I select fandoms to offer, I generally just go with a handful of ones that I'm confident I enjoy, I'm familiar with, and I am confident I can write good stories for. And then I try to figure out what kind of stories I'm willing to write. For example, I've never written slash or explicit fanfiction of any kind, so if there are characters that look like it's likely someone is going to request slash or explicit fic, I only offer to write for one of them or neither, because I don't want to disappoint my recipient with my mediocre porn-writing skills. :P The details in the prompt are optional, but I would feel pretty bad if my recipient wrote "all I want is porn!" and my non-porn-writing self couldn't deliver.

When I try to figure out which fandoms to request, I just go with what I love best and would make me very happy to receive stories in. Sometimes my dearest wishes don't come true, but generally everything is so awesome it doesn't matter.

RPF is real person fiction, which is fanfiction written with real people as the characters. So, historical RPF is basically historical fiction using non-fictional characters (i.e. Henry VIII and his wives), but people also write it for contemporary actors, athletes, musicians, political figures, etc.

Cool! Well, I signed up. Can't wait!

Also, Sicarius was not listed as a possible character when I signed up. Was he for you?

I'm not sure I can aspire to a Dear Yuletide Writer letter of the extent you've written... But do you recommend trying? Is it totally hopeless without one?

He should be! I nominated him, though I didn't select any specific characters when I signed up. I just went with the "all" option by leaving that entry field blank. They've been having some weird issues with the tag sets, though, so let me check to make sure he didn't .

Oh, wait. I can't check because the archive is down. :( He was showing up in the tag set before! I know, because I checked. Maybe try again later?

ETA: Judy, he should be in there. He's listed in the tag set. Did you spell his name right? I know I keep typoing it as Sicarious, stupid fingers. There has been an issue with approved characters not showing up in the drop down when their names are entered, so if you want, you can edit your requests and see if he doesn't show up this time. I think it's also all right if you just type his name in as a character, without waiting for the drop down list to pop up.

I am a windy old bag, so don't feel you need to write a super huge one. I wouldn't say it's totally hopeless, but it does give a wider audience access to your prompts for a longer time. And if you post it here, someone on the forums might take off running with it. :)

Hmm, I wonder if we could do a Secret Santa fic/art exchange here. Secret Sicarius exchange? Sicarius bars in every stocking!

I WILL DO A SECRET SANTA ART EXCHANGE. I'd do a fanfiction, but in all honesty I'm really lazy when it comes to writing stuff down and basically never finish anything. I will draw for peanuts though :D
