Thanks for the comments. When I was thinking about Mal writing a short-but-sweet goodbye note I came across this article:

which kinda killed the idea.
"Oh good," Maldynado said. "Isabel got out."

OMG.  Wow.  Getting sick seems to do wonders for the plot bunnies. :P

Thanks everyone!

Yes I am currently conducting research for a report on the creative properties of mucus. If anyone would like to be a test subject please PM your address and I will send you a used tissue. (UK households only, so that's you Kitty)

The theory seems to have some (sticky) substance to it, as here is chapter four. Enjoy.

Well from the results it seems to be a good working hypothesis that plot bunnies are not discommoded by mucus at all.  Nice work.

BTW:  I've been re-reading bits of EE1 for a plot bunny I'm working with and realized that despite the wanted posters few folks in stumps tend to recognize (or admit to recognizing) Sicarius on sight at the beginning of the series.  I just re-read the scene where the team gathers for the first time and Mal is shocked that the fighter who trounced him was Sic.  Deret, on the other hand, recognizes him immediately.  Your fic seems to explain that potential anomaly rather nicely.
