Sicarius: The Musical
« on: March 25, 2013, 02:36:06 am »
People who frequent the chatroom will know this: that we have it on very good authority that Sicarius' inner soundtrack may or may not include the song "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" by Bryan Adams. His theme song may also be "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls.

This got us thinking about what other songs Sicarius lives his life to. Was "Jolene" as covered by The White Stripes running through his head at every mention of Deret? What about Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence" all those times he worried about spilling the beans to Sespian?

Oh yes, ladies and gents - this is the power ballad thread, as moderated by Sicarius' inner angsty poet.

We've got a list and we're not afraid to share it - add yours and see where it goes! Please read over and make sure your selection isn't here before adding it

PS: Since this is a long post try not to quote the entire thing - it's hard to follow a conversation when the entire page is basically one massive quote :D

Getting ready for our flight and I had to say, Billy Joel & Bryan Adams made my morning.  Now if you can find a way to work in something by Huey Lewis (Happy to be Stuck With You, perhaps?) I will be set.  :D

Thanks for the laughs. Great idea. I love it! Such good suggestions!

This thread is well-timed! I heard a song the other day and I cracked up because I immediately thought of Sicarius - When You Say Nothing at All by Alison Krauss. I found it quite cute.  Made me think of another mushy song - Something by the Beatles.

Since this thread is, in fact, called Sicarius: The Musical, how about some show tunes? Being the musical theatre nerd that I am, that is where my brain goes.

I Can Do That - A Chorus Line (I can forage...)
I've Never Been In Love Before - Guys and Dolls
Take Me As I Am - Jekyll and Hyde (You know who I am, this is who I am, take me as I am...)
You Are My Home - The Scarlet Pimpernel
My Own Best Friend - Chicago
Not While I'm Around - Sweeney Todd (No one's going to harm you...)
Dangerous Game - Jekyll and Hyde (I am losing my mind, I am losing control, full of feelings I can't define...)

And of course there's opener from the show Assassins - Everybody's Got The Right, which says: Come on and shoot a president!

Makes me think we should compile a soundtrack for the others! For Amaranthe, Toucha Toucha Touch Me from Rocky Horror, or City on Fire from Sweeney Todd.  For Maldynado - I Feel Pretty from West Side Story...it's alarming how charming I feel...I can see it now.

 :D

OK...now that we have a list started we should engage in filking behavior to make the lyrics even closer to the stories.

For those of you who don't know filk is a style of folk music that originated at science fiction conventions.  Sometimes its original songs but more often its lyrical parodies of existing songs (think Weird Al Yancovic).  I couldn't find a good consensus definition for the term other than something akin to the U.S. Supreme Court's definition of pornography (I know it when I see it).   The word itself can be used as either a noun (filk) or a verb (filked, filking etc.).

Eye of the Tiger by Survivor is perfect "Sicarius training" music. It's not a power ballad, granted, but still.

I see him singing Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum when he finally laughs, loves and lets it be known ("If music be the food of love, then laughter is it's queen"). The video is seriously horrible and looks like a Monty Python skit, but the song is a classic.

The Spy by the Doors would be a good song for him to "stand guard over Amaranthe" by. Lyrics for that are here.

When their time comes to leave the living behind (when they are old and grey), they simply must go to the notes of Don't Fear the Reaper, the HIM version.

How Soon Is Now? The Smiths

Sounds badass, but is pretty lonely and lots of turmoil in the lyrics: "You shut your mouth/How can you say/I go about things the wrong way/I'm human and I deserve to be loved/Just like everybody else does."

I'm thinking that it's about his confusion in Dark Currents, while he's trying to understand the "No killing" rule, but figuring out Am isn't just a means to an end anymore.

Blood and Betrayal: While he's taking that long, long run: Us Against the World, Coldplay  -- If anybody is "My drunken hazard Daniel/in a lion's den" it's Amaranthe.
"Should we take their clothes?"
"To what end?"
"....Pockets?"

Not a power ballad, but... The other day My Never by Blue October came on my iPod and I was going, oh yeah, this is Angsty!Sicarius (I lost a lot of what I don't expect to ever return/ and the chorus: I had a dream that you were with me, it wasn't my fault/ You rolled me over, flipped me over like a somersault)

And then I realized it's also the theme song of the angsty werewolf from Twilight and my brain died a little.

Once you've made sure that the signal gets through
There's one final thing that I want you to do
Put me where I'll see stars, so that I can see you
And I'll soar like a leaf on the wind

Well done, ladies. Just the other day, I was singing some Foreigner in the shower. "I wanna know what love is/I want you to show me..."

But you've completely missed Meatloaf. Travesty.

And Unchained Melody. Ms. Gabby loves to do pottery with that one, because then she can go on a cleaning spree.

Here are two bits from Sarah McLachlan songs that have been floating around in my head:

You take me in, no questions asked/You strip away the ugliness that surrounds me/Are you an angel?/Am I already that gone?/I only hope that I won't disappoint you

-From "Sweet Surrender"

I never would have opened up/But you seemed so real to me/And after all the bullshit I've heard/It's refreshing now to see/That I don't have to pretend/She doesn't expect it from me

-From "Good Enough"

Angsty!Sciarius makes me sad.  :'(
